Many users make similar mistakes in the early stages of learning SolidWorks. These mistakes not only lengthen the learning process but can also lead to the formation of bad modeling habits. This guide covers the 10 most common mistakes and how to avoid them.
1. Trying to Learn All Commands at Once
Trying to learn every command quickly is a common mistake for beginners. Focus first on fundamental tools: Sketch, Extrude, Cut, Revolve, Fillet, Chamfer, Pattern, and Mirror.
2. Not Learning Sketch Rules Thoroughly
Every model in SolidWorks starts with a well-prepared sketch. Use geometric relationships correctly, avoid unnecessary lines, complete all dimensioning, and create Fully Defined sketches wherever possible.
3. Ignoring Parametric Modeling Logic
SolidWorks works on parametric modeling logic. Build your model thinking about future revisions — don't focus only on the end result.
4. Starting with Complex Projects
