How to Learn SolidCAM: A Roadmap for Beginners
With the right learning sequence, SolidCAM is achievable even for complete beginners. This guide presents a step-by-step roadmap from foundational knowledge to advanced CAM use.
CNC manufacturing is more than operating a machine. Design, CAD modelling, CAM programming, and quality control are all interlinked. SolidCAM sits at an important node in this chain: it generates the toolpaths needed to machine a designed part on a CNC, and its integration with CAD systems like SolidWorks makes the transition from design to production smoother.
What Should You Know Before Starting?
Technical Drawing
Understanding a part is the foundation of any CAM workflow. Being able to read dimensions, tolerances, section views, and manufacturing notes is a prerequisite for building a correct machining strategy.
Basic CNC Knowledge
SolidCAM is a CNC programming tool. Familiarity with axes, tool movements, G/M code logic, workpiece zeroing, and cutting parameters dramatically speeds up comprehension of SolidCAM operations.
CAD Modelling
SolidCAM works from 3D models. Experience with SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor makes it easier to manage model data and manufacturing processes within the same environment.
Learning Roadmap

2. SolidCAM Interface (2–4 Weeks)

3. 2.5-Axis Milling (1–2 Months)
Core operations — profiling, pocketing, drilling, and slotting — are covered here. By the end of this stage you can generate toolpaths for simple parts.
4. Tools and Cutting Parameters (Ongoing)
Tool selection, cutter types, spindle speed and feed rate calculation, and material knowledge are essential for professional-level CAM work. A good programmer not only creates operations — they define the right production strategy.
5. 3-Axis CNC Machining (2–4 Months)
3D surface machining, HSR/HSM strategies, surface finish quality, and toolpath optimisation are the focus. SolidCAM’s 2.5D milling, high-speed 3D machining, 4/5-axis, and iMachining modules all become relevant at this stage.
6. iMachining
iMachining is one of SolidCAM’s key modules, providing advanced cutting strategies and toolpath optimisation. The Technology Wizard, material selection, and tool optimisation are the main topics here.
7. CNC Code Generation and Application
Post-processor setup, G-code verification, CNC simulation, and actual part production complete the journey.
How Long Does It Take?
Someone with existing CNC experience can reach basic CAM competence in 2–4 months. A complete beginner typically needs 6 months or more of regular practice. Professional-level expertise generally takes over a year of applied work.
Practical Tips
