What Computer Do You Need for CATIA?
What hardware specifications do you need to work efficiently in CATIA? Minimum and recommended system requirements.
CATIA is an advanced CAD software used for professional engineering design. Computer selection is therefore important. A mid-range computer may be sufficient for simple part modeling, but large assemblies, complex surface models, automotive components, and multi-part projects require more powerful hardware. Dassault Systèmes publishes supported hardware and certified workstation lists for CATIA and its other products.
Processor (CPU)
In CATIA, model creation, computational operations, and design updates are particularly dependent on processor performance. For beginner and training-level use, an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 may be sufficient; for professional use, Intel Core i7/i9 or AMD Ryzen 7/9 series processors are recommended. For large projects, Intel Core Ultra series or upper-segment AMD Ryzen models can be preferred.
RAM
RAM is especially important in large assemblies. Working can begin with 8 GB for simple training exercises; however, 16 GB is the ideal level for CATIA training and professional entry. For large assemblies and complex projects, 32 GB or more of RAM is recommended. Insufficient RAM can cause the software to frequently freeze or crash.
Graphics Card (GPU)
The graphics card is important for 3D rendering, rotating models, and maintaining smooth performance in large assemblies. Since appropriate graphics hardware and driver compatibility are critical in professional CAD software like CATIA, Dassault Systèmes regularly updates its certified hardware lists. For training level, NVIDIA RTX 3050 or RTX 4050 can be preferred; for professional use, RTX 4060 or above; for large projects, NVIDIA's professional RTX A series is suitable.
Storage and Operating System
An SSD enables CATIA files and project launches to load much faster compared to an HDD. A minimum of 512 GB SSD is recommended; for professional use, a 1 TB NVMe SSD is a more appropriate choice. In terms of operating system, current CATIA solutions are generally supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11 64-bit systems.
Laptop or Desktop?
Desktop computers typically offer better performance for the same budget and provide upgrade options. However, if portability is important, workstation-grade laptop models equipped with an RTX 3070 or better GPU also offer satisfactory performance for CATIA. For students and beginners, a system with an Intel i5/Ryzen 5 processor, 16 GB RAM, an RTX 4050 graphics card, and 512 GB SSD may be sufficient. For professional engineering projects, an i7/i9 or Ryzen 7/9 processor, 32 GB or more of RAM, and strong graphics support are recommended. It should be remembered that a good computer does not learn CATIA for you — but it makes your learning and design process significantly more efficient.
