What Computer Do You Need for PLC Programming?
PLC programming does not require a high-end machine. Learn the ideal computer specifications for TIA Portal, Siemens PLC training, and automation project work.
One question that often comes up among those who want to learn PLC or work professionally with PLC programming is: "What kind of computer do I need for PLC?" PLC systems themselves do not demand exceptionally high-end hardware, but the development environments used — TIA Portal, STEP 7, WinCC, and PLC simulation tools — do have real requirements.
For recent TIA Portal versions, Siemens specifies a minimum of 8 GB RAM and recommends 16 GB or more together with SSD storage for comfortable use.
Does PLC Programming Require a Powerful PC?
A gaming computer or a high-end graphics card is not necessary for PLC software. What matters most is CPU performance, RAM capacity, and SSD speed. The graphics card is secondary unless you plan to use 3D simulation, robot simulation, or virtual machines, in which case a more capable system is beneficial.
Minimum and Recommended Specifications
For learning PLC at a beginner level, an Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 processor, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, and Windows 10/11 64-bit cover the basic requirements. For a more comfortable working environment, an Intel Core i5/Ryzen 5 processor, 16 GB RAM, and 512 GB SSD are recommended. PLC software typically involves many open windows simultaneously, so a large Full HD display also makes a real difference to day-to-day comfort.
For Intermediate and Professional Users
Running TIA Portal, WinCC, and PLC simulations smoothly is well within reach of an Intel Core i5/Ryzen 5, 16 GB RAM, and SSD setup. For larger projects or professional use, an Intel Core i7/Ryzen 7 processor, 16–32 GB RAM, and a 1 TB SSD make an ideal configuration.
Laptop or Desktop?
For PLC technicians and automation engineers, a laptop is generally the more practical choice — it can be taken to a factory, connected to a PLC on-site, and used during training. Desktop systems offer more powerful hardware options, easier upgrades, and better value for money. When choosing a laptop for field work, good cooling and long battery life should be among the priorities.
Graphics Card, USB, and Ethernet
High-performance graphics cards are not needed for PLC programming; integrated graphics are sufficient for everyday use. USB ports are important for PLC connections, and an Ethernet port is useful with some PLC models. Make sure these ports are accessible before purchasing.
Is a Mac or Tablet Suitable?
Most PLC software runs on Windows, so tablets are not a practical choice. Running Windows via a virtual machine on a Mac is technically possible, but a Windows laptop is a far more convenient option for PLC training and field work.
Which Computer Should You Choose?
You do not need a high-budget machine to learn PLC, use TIA Portal, and work on small projects. A laptop with an Intel Core i5/Ryzen 5 processor, 16 GB RAM, and 512 GB SSD will serve well for a long time. When evaluating options, prioritising RAM and SSD over raw CPU or graphics performance is the more effective approach.
